Tg Katong Sec School SHOCKER
48 fail O-level English
School wants a re-check for some students

SHOCK and disbelief. This was what several O-level candidates went through at Tanjong Katong Secondary School when they saw their results.
Based on their preliminary exams, they had expected to do well in their English paper, perhaps even score distinctions.
Yet staring back at them from their results slips: English D7 or E8, a score that would prevent them entering junior college.
The school, which was ranked number 25 in 2002, had 48 failures in the subject this year as compared to only one last year.
A total of 357 Tanjong Katong Sec students sat for the O level exams.
Of the 48 failures (defined as a score of D7 and E8 as there are no F9s this year), eight students obtained a grade that was four levels below what they scored for their preliminary English paper.
One class even had a 50 per cent failure rate in English.
A check with four other schools showed that the English paper was no tougher than in previous years - and some schools improved on last year's results.
Students and teachers in Tanjong Katong Sec are wondering how such a situation could have happened in their school.
'We are surprised by the results and we are analysing them to see what went wrong,' a school spokesman told The New Paper last night.
The school is so concerned that it is submitting a group appeal to the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) to get the results of some students re-checked.
i saw this article on SPH website. Could there really be some mistakes in the addition of marks? i truly hope so; it concerns our future. But if the Cambridges are at fault, would they give up their international well-recognised reputation for the sake of singaporean candidates? MOE, pls do sth!!!
Today is a GIFT.
